Football reporter pens second book on local club

A football writer has published his second book on the history of his local club.

Jon Palmer, Cheltenham Town reporter for the Gloucestershire Echo, looked back on some of the club’s best exponents for his 2006 tome ‘Cheltenham Town: 50 Great Players’.

In his latest book he has turned his attention to some of the club’s most memorable games in ‘Cheltenham Town: Classic Matches’.

Jon, who last year raised over £2,300 running the New York Marathon, said: “I have been covering the club since March 2006, taking over from Derek Goddard, who covered the Robins for more than 40 years.

“The book will mark the tenth anniversary of Cheltenham Town’s promotion to the Football League.

“It includes all the landmark matches from the club’s history, including FA Cup giant-killing acts, the FA Trophy success at Wembley, some goal bonanzas and all the key matches for Cheltenham’s promotion successes.

“The earliest match featured in the book is an FA Cup second round win over Carlisle United in the 1933-34 season and the most recent is this season’s thrilling 6-3 defeat by Peterborough United at Whaddon Road.

“There is a foreword written by current club captain John Finnigan, the only man who played in both of Cheltenham’s two play-off final triumphs at the Millennium Stadium, in 2002 and 2006.”

The book is due out in August and will be available at Amazon as well as Cheltenham Town’s club shop and stores around the town.
