Family's fundraiser in former journalist's memory

The daughter and widow of a former regional press journalist will be raising cash in his memory later this year.

Peter Hampson died of a brain tumour on his 60th birthday in November 2007, just six weeks after doctors had diagnosed skin cancer which subsequently spread to his brain.

His daughter Rebecca and widow Linda will be running a ‘Race for Life’ event at Bakewell Showground on 17 May to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Derby resident Peter worked for the Belper News and Derby Trader before joining the Evening Telegraph in the mid-1970s.

He left the paper in 1987 to become a press officer for the Country Landowners’ Association but remained a regular contributor to the Evening Telegraph’s letters pages and also for its sister publication the Derbyshire Magazine.

Rebecca told the Evening Telegraph: “It was doubly hard that it was his birthday but I always knew he would do something like that.

“It was the journalist in him, his final story. It was just like him to do it so neatly.”
