Ex-regional press sub-editor found guilty of murder

Former East Anglian Daily Times sub-editor Raymond Singh has been found guilty of murdering his wife by the five assessors in his trial today.

The assessors passed a unanimous verdict in the case in the early hours of this morning at the Fiji High Court, in the capital Suva.

High Court judge Justice Daniel Goundar will deliver his judgment on the case tomorrow. Singh was charged with murdering his 39-year-old British wife Wendy at their home in Suva last May.

He worked for the Ipswich-based EADT between 2004 and 2007 but moved to Fiji with the couple’s two children and Wendy’s teenaged son from a previous relationship two years ago.

Unlike the 12-person jury system in British courts, a Fijian judge is assisted by a smaller team of assessors – members of the public who make recommendations to the judge.

He is not obliged to follow their recommendations provided he states the reasons for doing so.
