Editor scoops award for 'going extra mile'

A weekly newspaper editor has scooped a regional award to recognise staff who “go the extra mile” at work.

Alan Quick, editor of the Tindle Newspapers-owned Crediton Courier, was given the award by Recognition Express Ltd, a company which manufactures promotional products and branded clothing.

The scheme is designed to reward exceptional loyalty, hard work and commitment.

Alan, 47, wrote his first story for the Crediton Country Courier in 1977 as a work experience student when he was just 15 which was the start of a 30-year career with the title.


An appeal by The Bolton News to double the number of hours provided by cancer nurses has collected £30,000 in its first two months.

The Newsquest daily is hoping to raise £200,000 by next summer to fund the work of Marie Curie nurses.

If it can hit target by the first anniversary of the campaign’s launch, the money will be matched by NHS Bolton.


The Campaign for Freedom of Information is running two half-day training courses on the information commissioner and tribunal decisions.

They take place on 30 November in London and 3 December in Birmingham.

The courses are aimed at those with a good working knowledge of the legislation and will cover issues such as disclosure of personal data and public interest.

Jonathan Collett has been appointed to a new position of director of communications at the Press Complaints Commission and will take up the role from 23 November.

Jonathan is currently head of communications for the Advertising Association and was formerly public affairs manager at News International and press spokesman for ex-Tory leader Michael Howard.


A team of footballers from Northcliffe’s Cornwall and Devon Media division helped to raise £25,000 for the Precious Lives appeal to build a new children’s hospice.

The staff pitted their wits at the home of Truro FC against a celebrity XI featuring pop legends such as Andrew Ridgley of Wham! and Westlife’s Nicky Byrne as well as ex-players like Bryan Robson and Lee Sharpe.

Around 2,000 spectators turned up for the battle which was won 10-4 by the celebrity team.

I would just like to point out that the team also included Falmouth Packet sports reporter Simon Larkins and staff from Pirate FM, a local radio station.
