Editor maintains stance on archived stories

A regional newspaper editor has reaffirmed his title’s policy of not removing archived stories from its website after a request from a convicted paedophile’s daughter.

Last month we reported how Birmingham Mail editor Steve Dyson had refused a request to pull a story off the paper’s website about a teacher who had been struck off by the General Teaching Council.

He has since been contacted by the daughter of a man who was jailed for eight years for indecency offences against boys at a Birmingham children’s home where he worked.

Steve blogged: “I know the original posting re: this issue created interest and some debate.

“I can only imagine the pain that the criminal behaviour of the father has caused this woman and her family.

“These sorts of pressure to erase conviction reports will continue. I feel it is crucial to maintain the stance of NOT removing any such cases.”
