Deputy editor bows out after 30 years on paper

The deputy editor of the Coventry Telegraph has become the latest senior journalist to leave Trinity Mirror Midlands, after more than 30 years with the title.

Charles Barker’s decision to bow out follows those of Birmingham Mail editor Steve Dyson and Birmingham Post editor Marc Reeves who quit last week after major changes were announced to their titles.

Charles has been with the Telegraph for the whole of his 30-year career in journalism, and was appointed deputy editor in 1999 after working his way up from junior reporter.

His departure means the Telegraph is losing both its two top executives as editor Dave Brookes is already on his way to the Birmingham Mail to replace Steve Dyson.

Said Charles: “I’ve had a wonderful time at the Telegraph. It’s been a privilege and honour to work with some terrific journalists over the years.

“Starting as a reporter and working up to be deputy editor has given me memories I’ll treasure forever.

“It will be difficult to leave the paper that I’ve loved, and the people I’ve worked with so closely for so long, but I’m also looking forward to new challenges and opportunities.”

Debbie Davies, managing director of Coventry Newspapers, added: “I would like to thank Charles for his valued contribution and wish him every success for the future.”

Although I left the Telegraph many years ago, I remember Charles as an excellent man who took me under his wing and helped improve me as a sub and designer. For those left I’m sure he’ll be sorely missed
