A regional daily has been recognised for its clean and concise writing in an annual nationwide award.
The Birmingham Mail has been the crowned the country’s best regional newspaper in the Plain English Campaign’s media awards.
The prize will be handed out along with a host of other awards at a ceremony presented by comedian Lenny Henry in London today.
Judges said: “A good regional newspaper will always have the local community at the heart of its work, and the Birmingham Mail demonstrates this more than most.
“Its clean, concise writing, its visually appealing layout and its use of good headlines and white space all make for a newspaper which is interesting, engaging and, above all, enjoyable to read.”
Birmingham Mail editor Steve Dyson, who leaves the paper at the end of the month, said: “This is a tremendous tribute to all the staff at the paper.
“We strive to be concise and appealing to all, so to be recognised as the best regional newspaper at a time of such change in the industry just shows how hard-working and committed our staff are.”
Plain English Campaign has been running since 1979 to counter gobbledygook, jargon and misleading public information and each year presents awards for the best and worst examples of the English language.

The International Media Award: Current TV USA
Best National Newspaper: Daily Telegraph
