Daily Post says goodbye to its Saturday edition

The last ever Saturday edition of the 153-year-old Liverpool Daily Post hit the shelves at the weekend.

The Trinity Mirror morning title announced it was switching to five-day publication last November as part of a wider shake-up of the company’s operations in the Liverpool.

In Saturday’s edition editor Mark Thomas wrote an open letter to readers detailing what changes they could expect to see.

He said: “For 153 years we have been the trusted source of information for Merseyside and beyond; delivering informed debate, lively features, and quality coverage six days a week.

“Now this newspaper is entering a new phase in its existence. The copy of the Saturday Daily Post you hold in your hand today will be the last one published.

“Our commitment to our readers remains unchanged. Nevertheless, the challenges faced by the newspaper industry as a whole are very real and they demand difficult decisions must sometimes be taken.”

The Elegant Homes supplement has been rebranded LDP Homes and will now be published on Thursday while this Friday’s edition will offer the first LDP Weekend – a 16-page pullout featuring content from the former Day 6 supplement including antiques, the pub column, and in-depth features, alongside movie and DVD reviews and TV listings.

Other features remain unchanged though as the weekend’s football reports ‘Post Match’ will still appear on Mondays and LDP Business comes out on Wednesdays.

Mark added: “We are also expanding and improving our online Daily Post, with a new-look website that aims to deliver the very best in news, views, features, video.

“We are committed to maintaining our reputation for accurate, intelligent and considered coverage of the region and I firmly believe our website has a fundamental part to play in that future.

“I believe our future is an exciting one and I invite you to join us as the Daily Post takes the next step in its evolution.”

To quote the editor: “The copy of the Saturday Daily Post you hold in your hand today will be the last one published. Our commitment to our readers remains unchanged.”
Yet another example of self-deluding management-speak, I suggest. One day someone will reinvent the newspaper and get rich.

I suspect his commitment to the readers IS the same…it’s just their commitment to buying newspapers that is seriously on the wane
