Advertizer celebrates 160th birthday

The Oswestry and Border Counties Advertizer celebrated 160 years of publishing the newspaper in the Shropshire town.

Events included an exhibition at the local library showing how the newspaper has evolved over its history, from its fledgling beginnings as a railway timetable which circulated just 1,000 copies.

Today it is a paid-for tabloid newspaper selling more than 10,000 copies per week.

Advertisers, local dignitaries, former editors and staff also helped celebrate the anniversary at a drinks reception at the library.

The newspaper, now part of North Wales company NWN Media, has been in family-ownership since 1849 and members of the Thomas family were at the centre of the celebrations.

Local schoolchildren released 160 balloons in Oswestry town centre and a book entitled ‘Cuttings and Clippings’ has been published reflecting on the history of the town in the mid 19th century through the words of the Advertizer.
