World championship silver as Emma-Kate misses out on top prize by a whisker

Oxford Mail reporter Emma-Kate Lidbury has narrowly failed in her bid to bring home a World Championship triathlon gold medal.

In May, Emma-Kate recorded two personal best times in winning the European Championship triathlon in Lisbon.

But she missed out by just five seconds in her attempt to add World Championship gold at Vancouver.

Having led the swimming, cycling and running race from the start, she was overhauled by Australian Michelle Wu in the final stages of the 10k run and had to settle for silver.

She told HTFP: “All in all it was good and bad. No gold, but a silver medal.

“I led the whole race from start to 200m from the finish line and then an Aussie girl, Michelle Wu, came flying past and that was it – gold was gone.

“I had a two-minute lead coming off the bike onto the run so am disappointed because I had gold in my sights and my race went so well up until that last 200m, but hey, that’s racing!

“My consolation prize is that Wu and I also posted the two fastest times of the day overall so I’m one of the two fastest female amateur triathletes in the world.”

Emma-Kate added that thanks to the wintry conditions in Vancouver, she was so cold by the time she got to the run she couldn’t feel her feet for the first 3k.

She is now going off to the Rockies on holiday with her mum for a week and taking a break from training.
