Work-to-rule strike action at Scottish centre

The National Union of Journalists’ chapel at Newsquest’s Herald and Times Group in Glasgow has voted to stage a work-to-rule starting on Tuesday.

The move was agreed after members raised concerns over staffing levels and stress.

Work-to-rule action includes editorial staff taking all entitled breaks, regular screen breaks and not working over their contracted hours.

It emerged last month that the Group was looking to make savings of around £2m – thought to be up to 50 jobs – across its three titles, The Herald, Evening Times and Sunday Herald.

Scottish NUJ organiser Paul Holleran said that management had known about high levels of stress for a long time including from focus groups they had organised themselves.

The NUJ said it had previously conducted three separate surveys of its own about stress at the Glasgow centre which it had presented to bosses.

Management at the Herald and Times Group declined to comment.

Well done Glasgow. What is needed immediately is a coordinated effort across all Newsquest titles, starting with Newsquest North East. This isn’t just about staffing levels and jobs, it’s about saving an industry and publishing quality titles, something management just does not understand.
