Vietnam photojournalist loses battle with cancer aged 72

Photojournalist Philip Jones Griffiths has died aged 72 after battling cancer. Born in Wales in 1936, Jones Griffiths launched his career with the Manchester Guardian before turning freelance in 1961.
He covered the Algerian war, Buddhism in Cambodia, drought in India and the legacy of the Gulf War in Kuwait. Jones Griffiths is best known for his work on the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1971 and his subsequent book, Vietnam Inc, which focussed on the civilian suffering caused by the war.


The Sports Journalists Association held its annual sports writer of the year awards. The Scotsman’s Mike Aitken took the regional sports writer crown with Jon Colman, of the Cumberland News, highly commended.
The Press Association’s Gareth Copley took home the sports photographer and specialist sports portfolio prizes while Getty Images’ Paul Gilham won best sports portfolio.


The Bolton News has launched five computerised screens in Bolton and Bury to bring people the latest news. They will carry breaking news and teasers of stories in the day’s edition.
There are plans to build up to 15 screens at various sites in the paper’s patch.


Former Grantham Journal reporter Brenda Welbourn has died aged 78. Brenda worked on the Journal from the 1940s until retirement in 1990.
Former Journal editor Fred Goodliff said: “She was a very good reporter and well-liked in the town, in particular for her church work. She was at the Journal for an awful long time and was the type of individual who was very good at the job.”


The average recycled content of newsprint used by the UK press for the whole of 2007 is 79 per cent, a small drop in comparison to the 2006 figure of 80.6 per cent. The change is being put down to a slight rise in imports of standard newsprint from North American mills which has a relatively low waste content.

It’s really sad to see that philip
jones griffiths has passed over to the great assignment in the sky.It is a sad day for all who knew him and many people he has inspired.

forgot to mention, has htfp ever considered having a dedicated obituary of all the snappers that pass over and have some of their work displayed on this site.
