Unpublished Cudlipp documents to be explored by academics

An archive containing previously unpublished documents held by the distinguished journalist and editor Hugh Cudlipp is to be explored by academics.

Led by Professor Bob Franklin of the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies at Cardiff University, researchers will sift through the Hugh Cudlipp Archive which includes more than 3,000 personal and professional letters.

Hugh started his journalistic career on the Penarth News in 1929 before rising to prominence in Fleet Street with appointments as editor of the Sunday Express and editorial director of the Daily Mirror.

Following his death in 1998, the archive which is now housed at the School, was donated to the University by Lady Jodie Cudlipp. As well as the letters, the archive also contains hundreds of examples of Cudlipp’s own editorial work.

The archive includes a substantial body of unpublished work, as well as cuttings concerning the Daily Mirror, the Spycatcher case, the Liberace libel trial, and numerous other video scrap books, photographs, reports and documents.

Professor Bob Franklin said: “The collection provides an extraordinarily valuable research resource for scholars of journalism studies.

“Over the coming years we will unravel the documents in the archive and provide extensive insight into the life and work of Hugh Cudlipp, as well as the development of contemporary journalism.”

Work will start on the archive later this year and will be accompanied by a series of online research papers titled The Cudlipp Papers on Popular Journalism.
