University launches new magazine journalism course

A journalism training centre is launching a new course in September.

The MA/Post-graduate Diploma in Magazine Journalism is on offer at Nottingham Trent University and joins its existing newspaper, online and broadcast courses.

The new diploma will share some elements of the newspaper course – such as shorthand, law and public admin – but will also focus on magazine feature writing and page production.

Robin Staniforth, director of the centre for broadcasting and journalism, said: “There’s a lot of crossover but we don’t want to have two courses that look exactly the same.

“You can imagine the areas where there would be particular importance – the news agenda would be somewhat different.

“We will be encouraging the magazine journalists to look more broadly.

“There will be more emphasis on writing longer features than short news items.

“We spent about a year drawing up details of the course but the notion of having the course has been in mind for years.”

The centre is currently looking to recruit a lecturer for the course with substantial experience of the magazine industry.

Like the university’s other post-graduate journalism courses, magazine students will be expected to complete a minimum of three weeks work experience.

Students can also choose to complete a Masters element once the diploma course is finished.
