Two leading regional newspaper groups have been shortlisted in the Association of Online Publishers Awards, it was announced today.

Trinity Mirror has been nominated for Editorial Team of the Year (Consumer) for its Gazette Communities project, which created 20 ‘citizen journalism’ websites across the Middlesbrough Evening Gazette patch, each covering small geographical areas based on postcodes.

The hyper-local sites include contributions from readers as well as relevant news gleaned from the paper or written by its own online team.

Also nominated in the AOP awards is Associated Northcliffe Digital, the online arm of Associated Newspapers and Northcliffe Media Limited.

It wins recognition in the Innovation 2008 category for bemyinterviewer.co.uk, an offshoot of its jobs platform Jobsite which gives would-be interview candidates practice in being grilled by the likes of Dragon’s Den star Duncan Bannatyne.

Both AND and TM have also been shortlisted in the Newspaper Society’s digital awards, full details of which will be unveiled on Monday.
