South Wales weekly closes down

Trinity Mirror-owned free weekly paper the Bridgend Post is closing.

A company spokesman said the title would cease publication with immediate effect, adding that sister paper the Glamorgan Gazette would continue to serve advertisers and readers in the area.

Difficult trading conditions have been cited as the reason by insiders but the company has not given an official reason for the closure.

There will be no advertising or editorial redundancies – the title is written from the company’s main office in Cardiff – but some part-time delivery roles will be affected.

The Bridgend Post, part of the Post Series which also has Cardiff and Barry editions, is one of several weekly papers produced by Trinity Mirror’s South Wales division Media Wales Ltd.

It also publishes the Cynon Valley Leader, Neath and Port Talbot Guardian Series, Gwent Gazette, Merthyr Express and Wales on Sunday alongside the daily Western Mail and South Wales Echo.

According to the latest ABC figures, the Bridgend Post has an audited distribution of 10,065 for the second half of 2007 – a fall of over 8,000 copies on the same period in 2006.

The Cardiff Post distributes 73,772 copies and the Barry Post 22,368.
