Online budget buster for Archant readers

Archant is giving its online readers a chance to see how this year’s budget affects them by running its own budget calculator.
Visitors to newspaper websites such as the Eastern Daily Press can punch in their weekly petrol or alcohol consumption and contemplate the latest tax increases.


Emma Harpley is the new communications manager at the National Council for the Training of Journalists. She replaces Laura Garbas who took a PR position with the Prince’s Trust.
Emma previously worked as a sub-editor and training officer with Newsquest and a freelance sub-editor at the Evening Standard and Metro. She was also a reporter with the Bury Free Press.


The Newspaper Society has finalised its shortlist for this year’s Circulation, Editorial and Promotion Awards. In the editorial section there are 17 different awards up for grabs.
The exact shortlist is not being made public as some categories only have one title listed. The ceremony takes place in Cheshire on April 10.


Dean Scoggins, sports sub-editor at The Sun, returned to the University of Central Lancashire to speak to students about getting ahead in newspapers. Dean graduated from the Preston institute in 2006 and was picked from 1,000 applicants for a trainee position at The Sun.
Meanwhile, UCLan newspaper post-graduate student Jan Harwood has added Jack Straw to his growing portfolio of political heavyweight interviews. Jan has previously grilled Lib-Dems Sir Menzies Campbell and Nick Clegg for website Rochdale Online, which is sponsoring his diploma.


Just one story on The Scotsman’s website has amassed 567 comments and approaching 400,000 page views. Reporter Gerri Peev split media opinion worldwide when she reported an off-the-record comment by one of Barack Obama’s aides who called Hillary Clinton “a monster”.
It is believed to be the third most-read online article on scotsman.com written by one of its own staff. The fallout from the interview led to Samantha Power’s resignation.
