Obama drama keeps hacks up late

Bleary-eyed staff at the Manchester Evening News worked through the night to cover the US presidential election vote.

The paper’s second edition hit the streets at 8am with a striking front page and two further inside pages with live pictures and quotes, pulled together by chief sub-editor Paul Coates.

This was then further updated for the paper’s lunchtime third edition and later city-centre free edition.

MEN political correspondent David Ottewell also kept the candle burning by constantly updating his blog which was viewed over 8.500 times.

MEN editor Paul Horrocks said: “This was a historic day, not just for America, but for the whole world.

“I felt it was important to give our readers unrivalled coverage of Obama’s victory, particularly as the timings put the event outside of the production times of most of the national press.”

Meanwhile, Ipswich’s Evening Star has moved the Barack Obama story along with coverage yesterday about his likely first foreign visit as president to meet with Gordon Brown.

The Evening Star says the new president could use nearby Stansted Airport where US Secret Servicemen have checked out the whole site for Air Force One’s arrival.

The paper reveals he could land at and depart from Stansted Airport as it has been used by other world leaders and high-profile celebrities.

“American secret service officers have been carrying out detailed sweeps of the airport, checking and testing all its high security arrangements, assessing risks, logistics and communications,” it says.

US Hey? What does that even mean? The Stanstead yarn sounds decent but not sure I believe it.

Not forgetting editors at the-latest.com, and www.plenty2say.com who were also up watching and reporting on the story…It’s not just regional press that report these things you know….

Is this local journalism. Surely Mancunians buy their local rag to hear about LOCAL news. Am i missing something here – has Obama become an honorary member of the local council or something!
