Northcliffe websites make the Big Green Switch

Local newspaper publisher Northcliffe Media is going green with new locally-branded versions of an award-winning environmental website.

Thirteen of its daily and weekly newspapers are now carrying versions of environmental campaign site Big Green Switch with the South Wales Evening Post and Plymouth’s The Herald the latest to join the project.

Each carries practical green tips and advice with imminent launches also due for the Citizen and Echo in Gloucestershire and the Herald Express in Torquay.

It is hoped to eventually roll out the platform to all Northcliffe centres.

Over 125,000 green pledges have already been made to the original biggreenswitch.co.uk which earlier this year won the Campaign for Change prize at the New Statesman New Media Awards.

The site has been created and launched by Northcliffe Media’s sister company, Associated Northcliffe Digital, under the steer of project manager Steve Allen.

He said: “We know there are a growing number of people who are keen to do their bit to help reduce the potential future impact of climate change but many people either don’t know where to start or feel that making a change to a greener lifestyle is likely to involve major inconvenience.

“We aim to demonstrate there are a large number of easy ways to go green which are not only simple and inexpensive but could actually end up saving you a sizeable chunk off energy bills while reducing carbon emissions.”

The site includes practical bite-sized pieces of advice which make the idea of greener living as easy and straightforward as possible.

Visitors can also contribute their own ideas, create a blog and sign up to a weekly newsletter and daily tips.

There is also a carbon footprint calculator, free competitions for eco-friendly prizes, the Big Green Shop and a Big Green Jobs section to help people find greener careers.
