North-West news stalwart dies aged 79

A long-serving Bolton reporter has died aged 79.

Peter Greenhalgh spent nearly 30 years with the then Bolton Evening News, 20 of those as industrial editor before he retired in 1989.

During his time covering local industry, he enjoyed the respect of management and trade unions alike.

He also worked as a news reporter and deputy news editor for the north-west daily.

After he left the Evening News, he continued working as a freelance journalist covering the Bolton Institute – now the University of Bolton – and Bolton Crown Court.

Peter lived his whole life in Radcliffe, near Bolton, and also worked for Post Office Telephones and did national service with the Royal Signals before beginning his journalism career at the Radcliffe Times.

He was also an avid fan of Bury FC and enjoyed fell walking and gardening until his health deteriorated.

The funeral will be held tomorrow at East Lancashire Crematorium, in Radcliffe, at 3.45 pm.
