Newsmen take a turn at the turntable

There’s a new Chris Moyles and Comedy Dave taking over the airwaves in Cornwall.

But rather than up-and-coming stars of local radio, it is St Austell Guardian duo Richard Whitehouse and Jonathan Jacobs.

Community editor Richard and his photographer sidekick are presenting a weekly two-hour show on Radio St Austell Bay.

The pair are given free rein to write, produce and present the St Austell Guardian Show in which they discuss the week’s edition of the Guardian – and anything else that takes their fancy.

They can even pick their own records.

The pair were given just a few lessons in how to run a radio studio before they were let loose on the airwaves.

  • Richard Whitehouse takes to the airwaves
  • Richard told holdthefrontpage: “It’s quite daunting having a control desk in front of you and three computer screens.

“Luckily, we’ve been able to pick it up quite quickly.

“We’ve done five shows so far and are hoping to keep it going.”

The station is run entirely by volunteers and, after a brief trial run, Radio St Austell Bay was given a full licence by Ofcom at the end of last year.

“They invited us the get involved and we jumped at the chance to have our own show.

“We have a look through the paper to do a bit more in-depth discussions on the stories and we can have guests as well.

“Apparently people are enjoying it. It can be heard online and we have ex-pats listening to it in places like Australia.”
