More than 3,000 entries for Scottish photography celebration

The shortlist for the annual First ScotRail Press Photography Awards has been announced.

Organisers received more than 3,000 entries for the 14 different prize categories.

Vying for the top award of Photographer of the Year are entries from The Scotsman, The Herald, Getty Images and The Press Association.

In total, Johnston Press titles The Scotsman, Scotland on Sunday and Edinburgh Evening News have gathered 19 shortlisted entries.

While their Newsquest rivals The Herald, Sunday Herald and Glasgow Evening Times also feature strongly with 15 shortlisted entries.

The Celebrity shortlist is dominated by The Herald, with three of the four shortlisted images.

The category features shots of Coldplay singer Chris Martin, TV presenter Gok Wan and singer turned political activist Sir Bob Geldof.

In the Local Photographer category, the Falkirk Herald has three shortlisted photographers, with Gordon Fraser of the East Lothian News also making the grade.

Winners will be revealed on March 26 at an awards ceremony in Glasgow.

Chairman of the judges Ken Lennox said: “Overall, entries are of a high standard.

“Scottish photographers are certainly holding their own in world photography.

“The Features category is full of innovation, style and quality, and the Open section has some wonderful images, including that rare pleasure – photographs that make you laugh.

“The portfolio categories will tax the judges this year as the images are excellent with little to choose between them.”

Members of the public can vote for their favourite entry in the Open category by visiting the awards website.
