Manchester shootings mapped online

Every fatal shooting in Manchester since 1999 has been pinpointed on an interactive map courtesy of the Manchester Evening News.

A trainee reporter on his way home from the first day of a journalism course won a byline the following day for his coverage of a road accident.
Will Grace, (28), from The Journalist Works course in Brighton was told the importance of acting like a reporter from the beginning – and took the lesson to heart by phoning through what he saw to the newsdesk of The Argus, where the course is based. Course leader Paula O’Shea said: “He showed great initiative and drive to spring into action on his very first day. He’s set the pace for all the others on the course now.”


Richard Williams, picture editor of the Daily Post in North Wales, has left the paper.
He is now acting picture editor of Trinity Mirror sister titles the Liverpool Post and the Liverpool Echo.


Two students on the University of Sheffield’s NCTJ course passed their 110wpm shorthand exams after just 11 weeks of classes.
Samantha Deakin and The Guardian’s Helen Pidd were the high flyers, joined by Lucy Ewing who passed the 110wpm benchmark with 100 per cent accuracy after 19 weeks into the course.


After graduating last month from University College Falmouth with an MA in Professional Writing, Frea Lockley has had extra cause for celebration by signing a contract for her first book with a leading publisher.
The college says that the book, to be published by Octopus in 2008, will take an upbeat, enthusiastic look at motherhood.
