Labour politician John Home Robertson has been appointed as the newest member of the Press Complaints Commission, it was announced yesterday.

The former MP and MSP replaces Dianne Thompson, chief executive of lottery operator Camelot, who is retiring.

The move was announced by PCC chairman Sir Christopher Meyer who is himself retiring in March.

Sir Christopher said: “It is essential for the integrity and success of the PCC that its board includes independent-minded lay commissioners who will speak up for the rights of members of the public.

“In my view, John Home Robertson – with a long and distinguished record of serving the public – will fulfill this role admirably. I am very pleased that he is joining us.”

Mr Home Robertson added: “Everybody is entitled to the protection of the PCC Code and I am looking forward to helping the Commission to address people’s complaints – I have some experience of working for citizens as a former MP and MSP.

“Self regulation is the best way to tackle problems in our free press and the PCC can positively promote higher standards too. I’m delighted to be taking up this appointment”.

The PCC has 17 members in all. Ten – including the chairman – are lay members who have no connection to the industry, while seven are drawn from among the ranks of senior editors in the national and regional press, and from periodicals.
