A regional press sub-editor has set up journalism training website giving students the chance to review courses.
Be a Journalist is the brainchild of Ed Oldfield, deputy chief sub-editor of the Express and Echo, in Exeter, who has more than 20 years experience in the industry.
The site has course listings for nearly 90 UK journalism training centres including the option for students to give feedback on their experiences.
Ed, 46, told HoldtheFrontPage: “My aim is to create an interesting and relevant resource which will be useful to entrants to journalism.
“I have expanded the forum linked to Be a Journalist to provide a section for every training centre.
“The feedback section should also provide interesting reading for those running courses.
“People are investing big sums of money, often thousands of pounds, by signing up to journalism training courses.
“I think they’re going to be interested in what others who have been on the courses have to say.
“I’m hoping the site will stimulate lively debate about journalism training in a rapidly-changing media landscape.”
The training centres featured on the website are broken down by subject area – general, photography, broadcasting, magazines, sport, investigative and NVQs.
Courses accredited by training industry bodies are also highlighted.
Ed added: “The courses listed are at all levels – from online and fast-track pre-entry courses to undergraduate degrees and postgraduate qualifications.
“You can browse the list by subject area then click through to a centre’s website to find out more.
“I aim to include every journalism training course in the UK, including those accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists, the Broadcast Journalism Training Council and the Periodicals Training Council.”

Staffordshire University’s MA in Sports Broadcast Journalism is fully accredited by the BJTC.
This is not acknowledged by the Be A Journalist website.

Thanks for pointing out the omission. I have now amended Staffordshire’s entry in the sport postgraduate listing to note the BJTC accreditation.
