I just fancied a change says departing MD

Outgoing Dorset Echo MD Paul Kinvig has revealed he is quitting newspapers after 20 years in order to “do something completely different.”

But he has denied that his decision to move on is a vote of no confidence in the future of the industry.

HoldtheFrontPage revealed this week that Paul, 44, was stepping down as managing director of Newsquest (Weymouth) after three years in the post.

Paul said he would reveal details of his new role in the next week, but confirmed it was “nothing to do with newspapers, PR or the media.”

“I will be really sad to leave the industry but I fancied doing something different. There are some times in your life when an opportunity comes along and you really fancy it.

“Newsquest is a great company, I’ve worked for them for quite a number of years but I’ve decided to do something else.”

Paul said he still expected to be involved in the appointment of a new editor to replace David Murdock who is also leaving his job next month after ten years at the helm.

Paul began his newspaper career in 1988 with Northcliffe at the Stoke Sentinel, and has since held a variety of roles at the Carmarthen Journal, the Western Morning News in Plymouth, the Daily Echo in Bournemouth, the Southern Daily Echo in Southampton, and the Hampshire Chronicle Series in Winchester.

Rats deserting the sinking ship?
It would seem rather a good time for the Bournemouth Echo swallow up its much more productive little sister the Dorset Echo.
It’s not if, but when?
