Ex-advertiser staff plan "wake" to mark paper's demise

Former staff of a Midlands weekly which closed down this month after 125 years of continuous publication are planning to hold a “wake” to mark the paper’s demise.

As reported on HoldtheFrontPage, the Long Eaton Advertiser, Long Eaton Trader and Nu News, which served Melbourne and Castle Donnington, ceased publication after the 16 October editions.

In the case of the Advertiser, it brought to an end more than 125 years continuous publication in the Derbyshire town.

Now former reporter Philip Dalling has contacted HoldtheFrontPage to help organise a reunion – “or more properly a wake” as he put it.

Philip began his career at the Long Eaton Advertiser in 1964 and worked there until April 1970. He later worked for the South Wales Argus and Grimsby Evening Telegraph before moving into PR and public affairs.

At the time Philip worked there, the Advertiser was part of a small privately-owned group, with the Stapleford & Sandiacre News and three other weeklies based in the Nottingham suburbs. The Nottingham papers disappeared many years ago.

Said Philip: “The Advertiser and S&S group was a fertile training ground for generations of journalists and many must still be working in the industry, to say nothing of those who have retired.”

Anyone interested in getting together to mark the passing of the two papers is invited to contact Philip on 01598 752335 or email [email protected]
