Courier beats the odds to deliver the day's news

Flash floods closed down schools and businesses and blocked roads in the Halifax Courier’s patch – but the freak weather did not stop this delivery man.

This picture shows Courier delivery man Tony Holbrook wading through the water-logged streets of Calderdale to ensure his newspapers reached the shops.

While other drivers were forced to turn back when faced with impassable roads Tony, who has worked for the Courier for 18 months, refused to give up on his route through the Calder Valley. He took an alternative path before jumping straight into the murky waters.

This snap was taken by a reader on Burnley Road, Mytholmroyd, as Tony, (64), was on his way to deliver to Brookes newsagents.

Field sales manager Louise Evans said: “Tony could not get along the road he needed to but just found a long way round to get the papers delivered. He got as close as he could and then took the plunge. He just got on with it, we are very proud.”
