Country's top sportswriters up for annual media awards

Some of the country’s best-known sportswriters and broadcasters, including past winners Martin Samuel, of The Times, Sky Sport’s Jeff Stelling and Patrick Collins of the Mail on Sunday, head the shortlists for the SJA’s 2007 British Sports Journalism Awards.

The prize winners are set to be named at a gala dinner in London on March 17, the first major event in the SJA’s 60th anniversary year.

Fighting it out for the Regional Sportswriter of the Year are Mike Aitken from The Scotsman, Jon Colman of the Cumberland News and the Lancashire Telegraph’s Andy Neild.

Paul Collins, from the Linlithgowshire Journal & Gazette, is among those shortlisted for the inaugural Young Sports Writer of the Year award for the Ian Wooldridge Trophy, named after one of sports journalism’s greatest writers who died last year.

Included among the awards for the first time is an Internet Sportswriter award while among the shortlisted candidates for the Sports Cartoonist of the Year is an entry from the Sheffield Telegraph.
