Cardiff press swings into action for Irish paper's rugby extra

The Evening Echo, the evening regional newspaper for Cork in Ireland, made use of local facilities in Cardiff to print a special edition of the newspaper immediately after the Heineken Cup Rugby Final in the city on Saturday.

The game involved Munster and Toulouse and a special 40-page tabloid was designed in Cork and transmitted to Media Wales in Cardiff for printing.

The edition contained a full-time match report, live photo coverage from the stadium as well as build-up photographs and reports from the day.

It was distributed free to thousands of supporters as they exited the stadium and celebrated Munster’s victory on the streets of Cardiff less than an hour after the final whistle.

Evening Echo marketing manager Orla Keane said: “The project was a great success and was used as a marketing initiative to move our evening newspaper from being last with the written word on Monday afternoon after the Sundays and morning dailies to being the first written report on the game.

“It also demonstrates to our readers that evening newspapers are still innovative and timely in today’s environment.”
