Capital's colleges sweep board at student awards

The capital is well stocked for the next generation of journalists after London universities dominated the annual Guardian Student Media Awards.

The top prize of Student Journalist of the Year went to Tom Roberts, editor-in-chief of Imperial College London’s ‘Felix’ newspaper.

Tom has been awarded a six-week work experience placement at the Guardian while Felix was also crowned Student Newspaper of the Year.

Reporters from the London School of Economics took the winner and runner-up spots in the Student Travel Writer of the Year category and The University of the Arts, London, won Student Publication Design of the Year for their magazine ‘Less Common More Sense’.

Student Broadcaster of the Year went to Danielle Couchman, of Nottingham Trent University, for her documentary on the academic underachievement of traveller children.

She was praised by judges, including Sky’s Dermot Murgnahan and the BBC’s Kirsty Young, for her “ability to persuade a community suspicious of the media to open up in order to report an untold story”.

Danielle has won a cash prize, a six-week placement at Sky News and a week with the Guardian.

The Student Critic of the Year prize went to Leo Robson, of Warwick University, who will enjoy a six-month internship as NME’s regional blogger.

The students received their awards from T4 presenter Rick Edwards at a ceremony in London last night. Judges included Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger, broadcaster Andrew Neil and Five News presenter Natasha Kaplinsky.
