Blue déjà vu for News readers

The News has been celebrating Portsmouth FC’s historic FA Cup Final appearance with a week of fund-raising events.

Last Month the Johnston Press daily held a Blue Day campaign ahead of the semi-final against West Bromwich Albion where readers were encouraged to dress in blue and donate cash to the Tom Prince Cancer Trust.

The event raised £50,000 in memory of the 15-year-old Pompey fan who died and is being repeated today with Blue2Day.

It will mark the end of a week of fund-raising which started with a picnic and concert on Saturday which attracted hundreds of readers.

With two cup final tickets being raffled off on the day, as well as volunteers with collection buckets, the event managed to raise more than £2,200.

Throughout this week runners have jogged through the city holding a Blue Torch spreading the feel-good factor and collecting cash for the trust which aims to raise £1m to fund research into bone cancer osteosarcoma.

The paper will also be going even more blue than usual – with blue headlines throughout and a four-page We’re Going to Wembley spread.

Editor Mark Waldron said: “The amount of money we have raised so far for the Tom Prince Cancer Trust has been simply staggering.

“Readers have really taken to our Blue Day campaign and we hope thousands of pounds more will be raised by the end of the week.

“It’s been great to raise money for a good cause at the same time as cheering on Pompey.”
