Ballot over strike action at Scottish titles

Union members at the Herald & Times Group in Glasgow have voted to ballot for industrial action.

The decision comes after it was revealed last week the company is looking to make savings of around £2m – estimated to be around 50 jobs.

A spokesman for the National Union of Journalists Scotland branch confirmed that the decision was taken at a union chapel meeting on Wednesday.

The ballot is likely to ask members whether to take full industrial action or action short of striking such as working contracted hours and taking full breaks.

A memo to staff at The Herald, Evening Times and Sunday Herald asked department heads to “review costs including staffing levels…..taking into account deliverable strategic cost efficiencies through changes to existing working practices”.

Managing director Tim Blott was unavailable for comment.
