Art exhibition to mark newspaper's first birthday

An ultra-local newspaper is celebrating its first birthday by hosting an art exhibition.

Local Edition was launched by former magazine journalist Clare-Marie White to cover the area north of Stoke-on-Trent – one which she believes is often neglected by the mainstream press.

She has now gathered together a collection of work by local artists, including herself, to mark the first anniversary.

Clare-Marie said: “The exhibition has been put together in just the same way as the newspaper: throw it open to anybody, with faith that it will work out well.

“It might seem a risky approach but one that works every fortnight in the newspaper and now with this magnificent exhibition packed with some of the most exciting art of our generation and a glimpse into what makes our area such a wonderful, challenging place to live.”

Local Edition newspaper is put together by Clare and a team of volunteer contributors and freelancer photographers and writers.

Financial support for the project also comes from social enterprise groups and Government grants.

Another independent news outlet for Stoke-on-Trent was launched earlier this year.

radicalpress.co.uk is run by pub landlord Matt Taylor from his living room and covers the north Staffordshire area.

Matt told HoldtheFrontPage he was hoping to approach major advertisers to make the site financially self-sufficient and expand its news reach to central Staffordshire and south Cheshire.

  • The art exhibition is being held in Stoke until tomorrow but an online version will be available at localedition.org.uk.
