Students descend on media outlets to gain industry experience

More than 60 journalism students from the University of Glamorgan have been boosting the country’s media output with work experience placements during the Easter break.

Students are attached to media organisations ranging from the South Wales Echo to a radio station near Chicago, from the Pontypridd Observer to Arena magazine in London, and from the South Wales Argus to Buzz magazine and the press office of Avon and Somerset Police.

They are learning how the press works and getting many of their articles published and broadcast.

Journalism lecturer Rob Campbell said: “I am always amazed at how they go out and get these placements in such a competitive field – and I am always grateful to employers for giving them such an opportunity.

“Glamorgan University makes a priority of getting real workplace experience for students, but we couldn’t do it without the co-operation of the employers.”

Most of the students are studying journalism as part of degrees in creative writing or media production, but some are among the first intake of students on the university’s new degree in journalism.

In other ventures journalism students are:

  • helping to produce a live newspaper to cover the Cyfrwng Welsh media conference at the university on April 22-24;
  • heading up the Glamorgan student union newspaper, Leek;
  • starting their own websites;
  • raising money for charity.

    The new journalism degree has been running since September and is already building links with the media industry.

    A series of visiting speakers in the first two terms has included representatives from the local and national press, the Press Complaints Commission and the campaigning group MediaWise. Students have also taken part in mock press conferences at South Wales police headquarters at Bridgend.
