New journalism centre launches fact-filled website

A new journalism centre has launched an ambitious website full of information about the course, the college – and the wide world of the media.

Trinity and All Saints, part of the University of Leeds, is known for its range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in all aspects of journalism.

The Centre for Journalism was itself launched last month to pull the various strands of journalism-related activity under one umbrella.

Its role in broadcast, print and online journalism has been recognised in the appointment of the first Visiting Fellows to the Centre – Zeinab Badhawi from ITN, Ian Eckert of ABACUS E-media, Robin Elias of ITV News and Martin Wainwight, of The Guardian. The Centre’s first Director is Dr Gill Ursell.

Tony Harcup, senior lecturer in print journalism, said: “The Centre for Journalism pulls together all the many good things that we are already doing, and in doing so it will create a whole that is even more than the sum of its parts.”

  • The new website covers all the options – and provides information on the industry as well.

Visitors to the new site can find news about the college, and there is a notice board containing the latest information on courses and activities.

The department’s weekly newspaper, the West Riding Post, has also been put online as part of the new website’s content, which will give a wider audience to the journalists involved in putting it together.

Students will benefit from dozens of links to media organisations and information, including trades unions and industry bodies, as well as newspapers,

TV companies, radio stations and other organisations relevant to the courses.

The Centre has its own television studio and newsrooms for both print and radio, all fully equipped to industry standards. Postgraduates receive intensive teaching from current and recent journalists, produce their own news bulletins or newspapers by working on real news in real time, and undertake professional attachments in newsrooms.
