Boost for Yorkshire college

Journalism training at Trinity and All Saints College in Leeds has been given a double vote of confidence by industry accrediting bodies.

The National Council for the Training of Journalists and the Broadcasting Journalism Training Council both gave the college glowing reports after separate inspections this summer.

The college has been re-accredited by both organisations until 2004.

After watching postgraduate print trainees work on the weekly newspaper West Riding Post in the college’s purpose-built newsroom, the NCTJ panel quizzed staff on course content, college facilities, exam results, and employment destinations.

Trinity and All Saints-trained journalists are currently working on a wide range of publications including Business-am, the Daily Mail website, PA, Yorkshire Evening Post, Telegraph & Argus, Halifax Evening Courier,

Coventry Evening Telegraph, Craven Herald, Ananova, and BBC Sport Online.

The NCTJ panel said: “It was a pleasure to visit the college. Both staff and trainees exuded confidence about the course and panel members were hard pushed to find any criticisms.”

The college’s training of TV and radio journalists was similarly praised – by inspectors from the BJTC, who heard that graduates work throughout the industry, including BBC News 24, ITN, Yorkshire Television, Radio Leeds and Radio 5 Live.

Course director Dr Gill Ursell said: “We have a fantastic tutorial team and technical staff. They are all very focused and take great pride in what they do – it is not just a job for them.”

The college is currently recruiting for its 2002 postgraduate courses, which run from January to November.
