Star-struck Lucy Hynes has jetted out to New York to cover the celebrity wedding of the year – between Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas.

Though the Shropshire Star might not have a direct claim on the girl from the valleys, the paper knows its audience and believes the effort will be worthwhile.

The Star is featuring the wedding heavily and has sent Lucy with photographer Richard Brock to the Big Apple to capture the excitement in the build up to the big day.

The Star’s news editor, Sarah Jane Smith said the decision to send Lucy Hynes was made because of her top-notch reporting on the Big Brother series winner Craig, who lives in the circulation area.

She said: “With the recent floods, it’s all been a bit doom and gloom lately, so we thought we’d go for something a bit more glamorous and exotic – and Catherine Zeta Jones is definitely that.

“Because we don’t have much competition in this area, we perhaps have more of a licence to do more ‘tabloidy’ features, so that’s why we’ve gone quite big on the wedding.

“It’s also a nice change for the reporters here. They’ve been working around the clock these last few weeks to cover the flood situation. It’s been a long hard slog.

“But as soon as the wedding’s over, Lucy and Richard will be coming straight back to cover magistrates again!”

Catherine Zeta Jones, who found fame in TV’s Darling Buds of May, hails from Swansea and when she says ‘I do’ on Saturday, she can be sure that all eyes back home will be transfixed.

Her local press is planning a bonanza…

The South Wales Evening Post is including an eight-page colour supplement with Saturday’s paper celebrating the life of the bride-to-be.

The newspaper has a wealth of photographs of Catherine Zeta Jones in its library and it plans to use many of these to mark the event.

And although The Western Mail may not have any reporters posted in New York, it also plans to feature the wedding heavily.

The newspaper will have a pre-wedding feature in Saturday’s edition and a report in Monday’s edition.

Assistant head of content Paul Groves said: “There’s a bit of cynicism but on the whole most of the people round here are really interested in the wedding.”
