You can keep your hat on

Readers of the Burton Mail have voted that performers should keep their clothes on.

The newspaper asked for their opinion when the council’s licensing panel decided to review its policy on striptease.

Seventy-three per cent of readers who responded said the ban should remain in place – but 27 per cent thought stripping should be allowed in clubs and bars around the county.

At the moment both male and female adult entertainment is banned in the county under Condition 25 of the regulations for granting public entertainment licenses.

Church and religious groups have also been asked by the council for their opinion on the proposed changes.

The review was prompted by requests from landlords, club and pub owners in the area who felt this sort of entertainment should be allowed.

Mail readers, however, thought strippers would lead to a decline in morals, and an increase crime and sexual offences as well as encouraging promiscuity.

Some readers thought people who wantedto watch a strip show could go across the county border into South Derbyshire where stripping is allowed.

The results of the reader’s poll will be forwarded to the licensing panel of East Staffordshire Council for consideration during the review.
