Wells journalist's new musical to be staged next month

A new musical written by a journalist from Mid Somerset will be staged in Wells next month.

Ken Edmonds, What’s On editor at Mid Somerset Newspapers, took two years to write the show Sally’s Cafe, including all the songs and music, and is also directing the show.

Ken said: “I have always wanted to write a musical, having written both plays and songs before but never having put them together.

“I have played the guitar and sung in various bands for more than 10 years. I wrote the script, the lyrics and the music for the show while my mother wrote the accompaniment and the harmonies for all the songs.”

Sally’s Café is a traditional-style musical, revolving around a quayside café in a typical British seaside town.

Set in 1959, the café’s owner, Sally Maguire, is shocked to be told her rent is being doubled, and it looks as if the café may be knocked down to make way for a high-rise block of flats.

As the plot unfolds, Sally and her friends stage a fight to save the café.

Ken said: “I am really excited about the show. It is the result of many hours of hard work but I am not sure what my feelings will be on the first night.”

  • The show runs at the Little Theatre in Wells from Wednesday, September 5, until Saturday, September 8.
