Weekly in tune with readers

Life on a Wales weekly might not be everyone’s cup of tea – but the achievements of a small team in Llanelli show that life’s what you make it.

Working on the Star is proof that the more you put in, the more you get out.

The three junior reporters, a news editor, two subs, a photographer and the editor have pulled out the stops with a series of popular special editions and supplements to reflect the diverse interests of readers.

This is on top of the regular four-edition weekly newspaper, which is regularly 100 pages-plus.

Staff have been hard at work supporting their local rugby club, Llanelli RFC – the world famous Scarlets.

The paper played its part in their success story, helping organise a triumphal open-top bus tour of the area after the Scarlets chalked up yet another Welsh Rugby Union Challenge Cup title.

Editor Robert Lloyd said: “We marked the occasion with a 28-page Scarlets 2000 special stand-alone at 32p. We printed 6,000 and it is still selling well.

“In August, Llanelli plays host to the National Eisteddfod of Wales, the largest cultural event of its kind in Europe. More than 200,000 visitors are expected to arrive. So last week, we printed our 28-page Croeso – Welsh for ‘welcome’ – special, which is now on sale, also at 32p. This time 10,000 copies were printed and sales have so far reached 7,000.”
