Views sought on Liverpool's culture bid

Readers of the Liverpool Echo are being invited to have their say in the city’s bid to be the European capital of culture.

The paper is asking its readers for their views on the bid to win the title in 2008, which would give a boost to Merseyside.

All the letters published in the Echo’s Capital of Culture forum will form part of the official bid document sent to Prime Minister Tony Blair for the final decision.

Geoff White, head of the Creative City sector of Liverpool’s bid, says: “We are aiming to place our city at the centre of the European and world creative and cultural map.

“No organisation can gather public opinion like the Echo. We want a genuine debate, promoting what is good and changing what is bad.”

The final submission date for bids is March 31, 2002, and a decision will be announced by the autumn.

  • More than 20 cities are bidding for the 2008 Capital of Culture title, including a joint entry by Newcastle/Gateshead as well as Birmingham, Cardiff and Belfast.
