VC memorial takes shape

The Hamilton Advertiser’s campaign for a memorial to Lanarkshire Victoria Cross holders has been boosted with the choice of a prime town centre site for the monument.

The six-ton granite sculpture will be placed in the town square and work has now started on its construction.

The memorial will be an archway of granite with a VC replica centre-piece and will feature the names of the county’s 14 VC holders.

A poem by a local school pupil will be inscribed on the keystone.

Children from all over the area have been asked to write an appropriate verse and the winner will be chosen from the entries.

The winner will also be invited to the unveiling of the memorial at a ceremony featuring the Kings Own Scottish Borderers, Lanarkshire VC holder Bill Reid, local dignitaries and Duncan Brown, the artist whose paintings inspired the Advertiser’s memorial campaign.
