University honour for Neil

Broadcaster and publisher Andrew Neil has received an honorary degree from the University of Paisley.

The journalist, best known for his tenure as editor of the Sunday Times, began his career at the Paisley Daily Express.

He was given a doctorate from the university during a ceremony at the Thomas Coats Memorial Church.

Andrew was born and brought up in Paisley, and started his journalism career at the Paisley Daily Express, writing cricket reports. As well as being a broadcaster he is also currently the publisher of Press Holdings.

A university spokesman said: “We are delighted to honour Andrew Neil, who is one of Scotland’s top broadcasters and journalists, and has made an important contribution to Scottish culture and society.”

  • Andrew comes from a family of journalists, and his brother Jim is a former editor of the Paisley Daily Express.
