A new survey is to examine the levels of pay received by newspaper trainees.
The research, by the Society of Editors training committee will also look at newspapers’ provision for training and will analyse why trainees leave their jobs.
The results will be discussed at a session on recruitment and retention at the Society’s annual conference in Belfast in October.
The research will sit alongside other surveys on the subject which are being conducted by the new NTO, the Journalism Forum and the NCTJ.
Training committee chairman, Professor Peter Cole, said: “We must maintain standards but it is no use defining those standards as those we held 20 or 30 years ago if they are no longer relevant.”
