Top class initiative

Latest figures show that more than 100,000 schoolchildren have used the Belfast Telegraph as a learning resource this year – showing the growing popularity of the Newspapers In Education initiative.

The longest running scheme is The Reading Passport, which has been joined by the new geography programme Press Packers and the Well-Read Newspaper Challenge for post-primary youngsters.

News quizzes which take place each term are also proving a hit in Northern Ireland.

Newspapers in Education executive at the Belfast Telegraph, Jennifer O’Reilly, said: “I believe it is important that young people be exposed to the media in all its forms in schools.

“It is through this study that they get the opportunity to look critically at what is presented to them.

“The Newspapers In Education initiative seeks to provide a structure for that study so I am pleased that year after year so many teachers join us.”
