Times writer to have her play broadcast on Radio 2

A journalist from the Evening Times in Glasgow is to have a play that she wrote broadcast on Radio 2 after winning a UK-wide radio drama competition.

Features writer Ann Fotheringham was one of five winners in the BBC’s Imagine contest, which challenged writers to come up with a drama based on meeting a musical hero.

Her play, Soft Wings In Flight, will be broadcast on Radio 2 tomorrow after beating thousands of other entries.

It tells the story of a Glasgow boy who meets singer and actress Dolly Parton in the unlikely setting of a space shuttle.

Ann, (36), said: “I liked the idea of writing about someone whose musical hero is not quite what you would expect.

“It is the first time I have had the nerve to enter a competition like this, so I am amazed to be one of the winners.

“I am looking forward to hearing my play on the radio.”

Scottish actress Sally Kinghorn, who appeared in TV show Monarch Of The Glen, and Sam Heughan, who was in Oliver Stone’s epic Alexander The Great, play the main roles – and there is a cameo appearance from Radio 2 DJ Ken Bruce.

Ann travelled to London to watch the play being recorded.

She said: “Ken was great – he recorded his scene after doing his mid-morning show and was fantastic.”

The judges, who included singer and actress Alison Moyet, Radio 2 controller Lesley Douglas, and DJ Mark Radcliffe, said of Ann’s play: “The whole play has a great deal of charm and delight.”

Ann is the only female winner and Dolly Parton the only female musical hero. The other winning writers have based their plays on Bob Dylan, Barry Manilow, Jarvis Cocker and Nick Cave.

It is Ann’s second success this year. In March she was named Features Writer of the Year at the Newsquest Awards in London.
