Time running out for Tigers

Time for the Tigers Co-operative to raise the money to save Hull City Football Club is running out – but the local newspaper has stepped in to boost the fund.

The co-operative must raise £500,000 to put in a bid for the cash-strapped club.

The Hull Daily Mail has shown its support by donating £2,000 from a special fundraising edition of the Sportsmail.

The newspaper handed over the cheque up front because timing is vital if the co-operative is to realise its dream of buying the Tigers – and securing the club’s future.

Fundraisers are now appealing to other local businesses to pledge money to the cause and co-operative member Bill Holt said: “We are running out of time and we need the businesses of Hull to stand up and be counted and show they care about the football club.”

The co-operative was set up in 1998 and has so far raised £25,000 and has more than 1,200 members.

Mail editor John Meehan said: “In Hull City’s darkest hour Tigers fans have rallied to the cause, demonstrating the passion they have for the club and the commitment to doing all they can to preserve it.

“We’ve backed the Tigers Co-operative in their call to swell the membership and funds. As a result, hundreds of supporters have signed up and pledged their hard-earned cash. But the fans really need the support of the business community.

“We are delighted to be the first major local company to support the Tigers Co-operative financially by committing all proceeds from a special edition of the Sportsmail.

“We hope other companies will also come forward to show their support for keeping professional football alive in this city.”
