"Terrific response" in search for new Whitby editor

Interviews for a new editor of the Whitby Gazette are currently taking place.

David Penman, editorial director of Johnston Press’s Yorkshire Regional Newspapers, said there had been “a terrific response” to advertisements for a successor to Phil Pledger.

Applications had come from “a couple of dozen well-qualified people”.

Mr Pledger (50) resigned after two years for personal reasons. He is moving to Cumbria next month.

He previously edited the Western Gazette, Yeovil, for five years and before that was editor of the Stamford Mercury.

He was assistant editor of the Reading Evening Post before moving to the 150-year-old Whitby Gazette, which has just gone bi-weekly.
