Susie joins sailors in the Gulf

Plymouth Evening Herald defence correpondent Susie Boniface has been in the Arabian Gulf with the Royal Navy this week.

She flew to Bahrain on Saturday and from there joined the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious, which is leading a task group of 2,100 sailors and air crew in one of the biggest build-ups of troops seen in the region since the 1991 Gulf War.

She has been filing copy and pictures by e-mail and the paper plans further coverage after she returns to England today.

The trip is the first of its kind for 22-year-old Ms Boniface, who joined the Evening Herald 18 months ago.

News editor Bill Martin said: “Plymouth is a naval city with a lot of sailors and their families living here, so the navy is a major part of our news agenda.

“This sort of trip is fantastic for us because it gives us a chance to see ‘our boys’ in action and talk to them and take pictures while they are working.”
